Judging Criteria & Scoring System

Difficulty Score

The Difficulty Score reflects the complexity of skills performed during a gymnastics routine.

It takes into account elements such as tumbling passes, leaps, turns, and combinations. There is no maximum score, meaning athletes are rewarded for attempting more challenging routines—the higher the difficulty, the greater the potential D-Score.

Execution Score

The Execution Score begins at 10.0, and judges subtract points for any mistakes or imperfections.

Deductions are made for form breaks, balance errors, falls, incomplete elements, and flaws in technique. The goal is to perform with precision, control, and proper form to maintain a high E-Score.

Artistry

In disciplines where it applies, such as artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, artistry plays a significant role.

Judges assess the creativity and originality of the routine, how well the performance interprets the music, and the expression, emotion, and flow throughout. Artistic presentation enhances the overall impression of the routine.

Penalties

Penalties are applied for various rule violations that occur during a performance.

These include exceeding the time limit, wearing incorrect attire, interference from the coach, or stepping outside the designated performance area. Such infractions reduce the gymnast’s final score regardless of routine quality.

Gymnastics routines are evaluated based on international standards defined by the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG). Judges assess performances using a combination of difficulty, execution, artistry, and penalties.
